ABC-Development Empowering Women Through Savings and Sustainable Farming
Through the Strong Foundation Project, a standalone nutrition initiative funded by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and implemented by ABC-Development through CARE, women who once struggled to save and plan for the future are now transforming their lives through the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA).
What started with small weekly savings has grown into a thriving communal farming enterprise producing okra, cucumber, pepper, and rice. The harvest not only improves household nutrition but also generates income that helps families purchase school materials, household essentials, and other basic needs.
Nbambay Suma, the chairlady of the women's group and Mariama Bangura, a VSLA member, shared: "Before the training we received from ABC-Development, we struggled to save money and plan for our families' future. Today, we save regularly, cultivate different crops, feed our families, and sell the surplus to improve our lives."
The impact extends beyond farming. The VSLA has strengthened women's confidence, encouraged teamwork, promoted financial discipline, and created opportunities for sustainable economic empowerment.
Community Chief Pa Alimamy Turay praised the initiative, noting that ABC-Development has helped transform not only livelihoods but also mindsets by supporting farmers with seeds, farming tools, and practical knowledge that continues to benefit the entire community.
At ABC-Development, we believe lasting change begins when communities are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to shape their own future. The inspiring journey of the women of Babara Community demonstrates that sustainable development is achieved when people move from dependency to self-reliance through collective action.
Together, we are building stronger communities, improving nutrition, and creating sustainable livelihoods—one community at a time.
